GROWING A FEW VEGES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS - A former tenant at my new place built these gopher-proof raised beds, filled them with the perfect combination of soil and amendments, tended them for a year, and then left. Given this gift, I would be remiss not to take advantage of all that organic gardening work already done for me, so I’ve planted a couple of tomatoes, bell peppers, cantaloupe, cucumber and some sweet basil. Meanwhile, eating lettuce and parsley, and just starting to pick strawberries. Lucky me!
LOST MY JOB - BURNED FOSSIL FUELS. With acknowledgment to my greener friends that I’m a woeful example, my response to trouble is to get in my car and take off for a drive, preferably a long one. I blast the space between my ears with Mark Knopfler’s or Eric Clapton’s oh so SWEEET guitar riffs, or Bon Jovi’s or Bob Seger’s flat-out road rock, or maybe the Gipsy Kings … whatever it is, it’s loud and it’s constant. At the same time, I look for the quiet beauty of meandering back country roads, and occasionally, I’m rewarded with a smile-invoking surprise, like turkeys crossing the road. Yes, I got laid off on Friday, but I feel much better now that I’ve returned from emptying my head of craziness, my heart of pain and filling both with what’s good about it all. And I treasure my friends, who are so loving and supportive. Thank you.
DAY TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO FOR SOME CULTURE AND, UNEXPECTEDLY, DOLPHINS!! Went to the Legion of Honor above the northwest corner of San Francisco, then to Land’s End and the Cliff House, where I saw DOLPHINS in the surf! No, really, at least 5 or 6 of them! The photo doesn’t do them justice. Then a late lunch with my sis and her S/O. A lovely day, for which I’m grateful.
VERDANT AND QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD - After nearly 3 months here, I finally got OUT of my friggin’ car and walked down to the local pharmacy, a mere mile or so away through a local park that was simultaneously hosting a birthday party, a softball game, numerous Frisbee-catching dogs, stroller-babies with moms and dads and everything else that marks an American end to Summer.
